So whether you're looking to create lasting change in your life or simply need some inspiration for your next vacation, read on!
Cultivating Joy
"The present moment is filled with joy and happiness.
If you are attentive, you will see it,"
- Thich Nhat Hanh
Cultivating joy may not be at the top of your to-do list, but it is an important task nonetheless. Joy is a feeling of happiness and contentment that comes from connecting with something larger than ourselves, and it is essential for our mental and emotional wellbeing. When we are joyful, we are more likely to be optimistic and to see the best in people and situations and gives us the strength to face difficult times with hope and resilience. Joy helps us to see the beauty in everyday moments and to find meaning in our struggles. On top of all that goodness – joy is contagious! When we cultivate joy in our own lives, we can't help but radiate it out into the world, making the world a brighter place for everyone.
But joy doesn’t just have the benefits of making our day a little brighter, we are also more likely to be productive, creative, and resilient in the face of adversity. Studies have shown that joy can actually improve our physical health by boosting our immune system and reducing stress levels.
In a world that is often filled with negativity, cultivating joy is an act of self-care that is well worth a little extra effort, until it becomes part of your daily life. No doubt, you’ve experienced our team's bright shining faces, and enthusiastic attitudes (yes, even at a 5am ModFit class!). So how can you bring a little more joy into your life? Well, we sought out some inspiration from members of our Tugun studio’s Pilates & Reformer Team on how they love to cultivate joy in their day-to-day life.
Do what you love and stop putting so much pressure and judgement on yourself.

When I need a boost I keep a gratitude journal, or I do simple things like buying myself flowers or calling a dear friend!
- Lesleigh Burrell
Make a little time to do nothing. Sometimes I get so involved in accomplishing goals and trying to do everything perfectly that I need to schedule in time to simply have nothing on the list. It’s important because it allows you to step back from everything you are doing and gain perspective while in the moment.

Variety. Say yes to trying new things and be spontaneous.

Morning Routines
“Days are expensive.
When you spend a day you have one less day to spend.
So make sure you spend each one wisely.”
— Jim Rohn
Starting your day off on the right foot can make a world of difference in how productive and effective you are throughout the day. One way to set yourself up for success is to create a morning routine that works for you. This may look different for everyone, or may look different for you from day-to-day. But carving out some ‘me-time’ first thing in the morning can help you feel grounded and focused, setting your day up for success.
First, try to get up at the same time each day and give yourself enough time to wake up slowly and start your day with intention. Instead of reaching for the phone, for a mindless scroll, try starting your day with a quick and easy meditation, doing some breathing exercises or gentle stretches to wake up the body.
Secondly, it can be helpful to spend some time in nature and moving your body (you know we’re a fan of that!). You can go for a walk along the beach, or simply take a leisurely stroll to class, instead of rushing in the car. Time outside in the fresh air can do you wonders for the day ahead.
Finally, it can be beneficial to take some time for yourself each morning, whether that means sitting in a coffee shop mindfully drinking your morning brew, journaling about your goals, or reading an inspiring book. By taking care of yourself first thing in the morning, you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way during the day. Let’s take a peek at how some of our Tugun team like to kick-start their day.
I like to practise yoga in the mornings. I have a breathwork and meditation practice I’ll do. The movement aspect depends on how I’m feeling on the day and where I am on my moon cycle. Unless the surf is good then I’ll throw that all out the window and go surfing.

Starting the day sitting on the beach with a warm drink is a must.

Every morning is different for me, different teaching schedule daily but I do make sure I have a coffee and healthy breaky each morning. But on my day off… probably a cup of tea first, try not to rush into anything, get outside for a little bit with a nice breakfast outside on the balcony.
- Natalie Ryan
I’m normally setting off fast to get to a class to teach, but on the weekends I enjoy going for a walk when I get up and then having coffee with my man.
- Lesleigh Burrell
Stretch, cuddles with my little man and a cup of tea. All make me happy!
- Tamsyn McElroy
Time depends on teaching days. I usually wake up between 4am - 5am, hot shower, meditation, journaling and a nourishing breakfast before teaching or if I’m not teaching, I will head off for a beach walk followed by a strength or pilates class.

Taking Time Off
“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.”
– William S. Burroughs
It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We're always on the go, and there's always something that needs to be done. However, it's important to take some time for ourselves every now and then. Whether you call it "relaxation" or "recreation," taking some time to do things that you enjoy can help you reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your overall sense of well-being.
While it's important to find ways to relax that work for you, there are some activities that tend to be particularly effective when it comes to stress relief. It could be taking a relaxing bath, going for a walk in nature, sitting down with a good book, spending time with friends and family, listening to calming music. The choices are endless. Regardless of how you choose to spend your ‘r&r’ time – engaging in any activity that brings you joy can help you feel more relaxed and better able to cope with life's challenges. Our team are busy-little-bees, but they always try to make time to relax, rest & recharge their mind and bodies, so they can show up as their best selves for class! Here’s some ideas to inspire your next day off!
As much beach time as I can!! Doing anything outdoors with my partner and friends.
- Lucy Mulcahy
I like to try to get my own practice in or even go for a walk, a beach swim when the weather is on and some take out after cooking all week.
- Lesleigh Burrell
I’m usually outside, barefoot with salty hair. Spending time at the beach nearby or camping in the dunes afar. I love socialising with family & friends, cooking delicious food, passing plates with plenty of laughter.
- Prue Montgomery
Relax and be with family and friends.
- Tamsyn McElroy
I am a leisure connoisseur. I love to read, lounge, cook and listen to music.
- Stephanie Flaherty
I like to try and bond with my plants. I’m a new plant mum, really just learning the ropes! I really like to get in and attend Pilates classes myself on my days off. A little extra learning about topics that interest me is also a great way to spend my time off.
- Natalie Ryan
I love spending time with my family. We love going to the beach, walks, bike rides and catching up with friends.
- Kassie Redmond
Beach days are the best otherwise chasing waterfalls.
- Lauren Flanagan
Get outside and play – go to the beach, hike, mountain bike, SUP, rock climb, or play lawn games in the backyard with friends.
- Sarah Callaham
Ideally surf. Otherwise it will involve taking my dog to the beach. Or I’ll be tending to my veggie garden/ weeding haha. Has to be something outside.
